Pete Yorn & Scarlett Johansson Break Up

The issue for Scarlett Johansson’s musical career is this: she’s so earnest in courting an indie music crowd that she risks alienating those adoring film fans who might actually slap $30 on the barrelhead for one of her albums.

I mean, her first album was a collection of Tom Waits covers produced by Dave Sitek, when lord knows she could simply have gotten Timbaland to phone in some pap, added some Justin Timberlake cameos, and come out a cool million richer.

Similarly, her second album, this time with Pete Yorn (whose career highlight is the score of Me Myself & Irene) is nothing other than a tribute to Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot’s collaborations.

The bad news: Yorn is nowhere near the talent Gainsbourg was, so no matter how much Johansson may approximate Bardot (another question entirely), any comparison will be bad news for them. The good news: if you ignore the back-story, Break Up is a pleasant album of well-produced indie-lite that makes the most of Johansson’s modest vocal talents. The one exception is their cover of Chris Bell’s I Am The Cosmos: the original is such a strong and distinctive tune that it shines an unflattering light on the blander pleasantries of Yorn’s penning.

In any case, although this album isn’t so good you’ll be wailing at the thought of Yorn and Johansson breaking up, it’s sufficiently not-bad that, while listening, I never felt the urge to reply, “Oh, if only you would!”
